Spotlight on Jamilya Lee, Woodson Warriors Scholarship Winner
One of the 2021 recipients of the Woodson Warriors Scholarship program, Jamilya Lee is a 19-year-old student at St. Petersburg College and a resident of Jordan Park. The St. Petersburg Housing Authority is proud to recognize Jamilya as a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work and perseverance!
Jamilya credits her grandmother, who raised her since she was five years old, for her academic success. "She is my pillar and has shaped me into everything I am today. It was hard at first coming from a domestic abuse household, but my grandma never gave up on me or my sisters,"Jamilya explained. "She pushed us to stay in the books, through middle school all the way to my senior year. I was an honor student and principal list student, earning the title cum laude on my high school diploma."
As a graduating senior, Jamilya successfully applied to the Woodson Warriors Scholarship program, made possible by the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, in partnership with the Bunker Scholarship Committee. The purpose of the scholarship program is to make college education attainable for local African American high school students.
Jamilya said, "The Woodson Warriors Scholarship at the African American Museum has been a blessing to my family in helping us with my college funds so that I can achieve my dreams of going to college and someday being a college graduate."
Each year, Woodson Warriors Scholarships are awarded to a new group of high-achieving scholars, who will receive the scholarship every year of their college tenure as long as they maintain eligibility. "I couldn't be more grateful to be a part of such an amazing group of other scholars who want to succeed just as much as I do," Jamilya said. "I'm not sure what I want to be in life right now, but I am positive that I will find out."
All of us at the St. Petersburg Housing Authority believe in you, Jamilya, and we can't wait to see what you will achieve next!
