Hurricane Season Starts on June 1 - Is Your Family Prepared?
While events like hurricanes, floods and fires are frightening to consider, having a disaster plan in place can help families react more calmly to the unexpected and can reduce the loss of life and damage to property in the event of an emergency. SPHA’s Section 8 Program Earns Top Score Again
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has notified SPHA that its Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program once again earned a perfect score on the annual Section 8 Management Assessment Program (SEMAP) evaluation and qualified for “High Performer” status. SPHA is among a select number of housing authorities, out of approximately 3,200 nationwide, to achieve and maintain this designation, which is the highest rating that HUD gives to a housing authority. SPHA Hosts Workshop on Wounded Warrior Housing
On March 6, 2012, SPHA hosted its first Wounded Warrior Housing Community Advisory Group meeting to discuss the challenges that local military veterans, specifically wounded warriors, face in their search for affordable and accessible housing, and SPHA’s desire to address them. A wide cross-section of community members, including elected and city officials, social services agencies, government agencies, disabled advocacy groups, banks, developers, and veterans organizations, attended this introductory meeting. SPHA Buys Senior Housing Apartments
On February 21, 2012, SPHA finalized the purchase of Sunset Oaks Apartments, a 38-unit senior housing development, from 4888 Recovery LLC. Sunset Oaks Apartments, located at 4888 21st Avenue North in St. Petersburg, will become part of SPHA’s public housing program as an option for income-eligible senior citizens. SPHA, SPC Hosting “Lunch & Learn” for Jordan Park Residents
On Friday, February 3, 2012, representatives from St. Petersburg College (SPC) and SPHA will host a “Lunch & Learn” program on educational resources from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Jordan Park public housing development (1245 Jordan Park Street South, St. Petersburg, FL 33712). SPHA Helps Formerly Homeless Veteran, Family Celebrate the Holidays
SPHA's Adopt-A-Family program is making the holidays a little brighter for resident Gerald White and his family. SPHA provided wrapped Christmas gifts on December 23 to Mr. White and his five children, who range in age from eight to seventeen years. The presents, which included several toys and an outfit for each child, were purchased solely with personal donations from SPHA staff. Click here to read more.
